Digital makeup is a compositing technique used to change the appearance of onscreen actors. Outside of the film industry, this technique is also used in the cosmetics world to "try on" potential hairstyles, make up designs, or clothing.

Technique

In the movie industry, digital makeup is achieved by wearing green screen-compatible makeup or clothing. The actor(s) would be painted or clothed in the areas that are to be digitally replaced or removed. Once the scene is filmed, CG artists can composite their work directly onto the green-covered areas. This technique has been used in hundreds of movies such as Forrest Gump (Lt. Dan's missing legs), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt's face superimposed over the stand in's own face), etc.

This technique can also be used on still shots with layer-based programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Jasc Paint Shop Pro.
