General Hugh Ashdown was a Four Star General and one of the early leaders of the Resistance - directing the fight from Resistance HQ. He was aware of John Connor's prophesized leadership of the Resistance against Skynet and the events involving Sarah Connor in 1984; however, he didn't believe in it and even held a gun to Connor's face telling him that destiny could be changed in seconds. He discredited Connor's claims that the new model terminator would be any threat, despite their earlier development, as the Resistance had developed a new weapon against terminators capable of shutting them down.
Ashdown was determined that the weapon was going to work despite John Connor's repeated protestations to wait until Skynet's prisoners could be rescued. Against Connor's recommendation, Ashdown began the attack and activated the prototype weapon which, was a Skynet trap. The machines triangulated his position and sunk Resistance HQ with a torpedo, killing Ashdown in the process. He died realizing that Connor was right and knowing that the Resistance was no longer under his control - only Resistance HQ activated the weapon with all other bases waiting for Connor's approval.
