Resistance
From Terminator Wiki
The Resistance is a rebel organization fighting Skynet in a post apocalyptic Earth. The organization is made up of several of the survivors of Judgment Day, and is led initially by General Ashdown and culminates in the leadership of John Connor. Resistance soldiers wear red bands on their arms to symbolize blood. The symbol of the Resistance is a Red Double Helix (the shape of DNA).

History
With the date of Judgment Day changing, no date can be set to when the Resistance started. Though it can be inferred that it started soon after Judgment Day took place. However it can be said that the Resistance was founded from remnants of world's militaries, who surviving officers lead from a Los Angeles class submarine in the form of a leading council of Generals and Admirals, with General Ashdown leading them. After the events of Terminator Salvation, it can be assumed that John Connor has taken control of the Resistance.
Its main purpose was to fight the Skynet system, and to preserve the human race from annihilation. The Resistance carried out many missions attacking factories and breaking humans out of Skynet Work Camps. To even the battle, weapons were stolen and terminators were reprogrammed to help the Resistance.
Weapons, Equipment, and Tactics
After Judgement Day, when Skynet's robotic forces began to kill off the surviving humans, the former commanding human militaries began to fight back. In the case of the United States-as well as the remnants of many other large/well equipt countries-former military weapons, uniforms, body armor, vehicles, and aircraft in combination with newer plasma based energy weapons (copied, stolen or produced in captured Skynet factories) were used to fight Skynet worldwide. Some tactics were conventional, like Airborne Helicopter assaults, and others, like 'Hit and Run' attacks were not so conventional. The many years John Connor was trained by his mother in the South and Central Americas has helped John in many ways-not just because of the combat skills he learned but the lifestyles and tactics as well. When John and his mother were training/hiding in Latin America, Sarah sought out any and everyone that could help teach her son. In the process John and Sarah ended up living, training and fighting with many groups of guerrillas, paramilitary forces and freedom fighter-all of whom had extensive knowledge of fighting a larger, more numerous and better armed central enemy/government. The skills acquired by John in these various theaters of operations, in combination with tactics he learned from ex-U.S. Special Operations Force and British SAS personnel(whom his mother dated or he met after Judgement Day), his mother and his own personal combat oriented genius have allowed him to wage many styles of war (both conventional and unconventional) on Skynet and it's machines.

Other Survivors
Humans who did not join the military remnants became known as "Survivalists" who often ran and hid when confronted by Skynet, rather than fight. Others who took up arms often pretended to be in the resistance, but rather, took advantage of other survivors, such as in gangs and thieves. Both of these survivor groups were considered civilians by the resistance.
As stated by Kyle Reese in The Terminator, the Resistance triumphed over Skynet, and in a last ditch effort the computer system sent back a Terminator to kill Sarah Connor.
Time Traveling Missions
John Connor, and a few other Resistance leaders became aware of time displacement equipment that Skynet had developed. This technology fell into the hands of the Resistance. They kept this information very secret. Known missions include:
Movies
- Connor himself sent Kyle Reese to 1984 (The Terminator).
- Connor sent a reprogrammed T-800 back in time to protect a younger version of himself. (Terminator 2)
- Katherine Brewster sent a T-850 back in time to protect her younger self and and the young John Connor. (Terminator 3)
Television
- Kyle's brother Derek Reese was sent from the future by John to help the resistance in 2007. Because of the revelations of "Billy Wisher" in (Dungeons & Dragons) he co-opted the mission in order to assassinate Andy Goode. After arriving in 2007, the 4 man team (Sayles, Timms, Sumner, and Derek) set up a safehouse where they stashed stolen money and diamonds and began surveilling possible Skynet progenitors. They were later attacked by a T-888 ("Vick Chamberlain") after it detected them tracking its wife Barbara Chamberlain, a key Skynet contributor. Derek managed to escape but with his entire team killed, he resumed stalking Andy Goode and eventually killed him. The effects of this paradox-inducing event have yet to be revealed.
- A Resistance member known as "The Engineer" was sent back to at least 1963 to found a bank to hide the components of an isotope-fueled weapon and a time-displacement transporter built within its vault for the future use of resistance fighters. Both end up being used by Sarah Connor, John Connor, and Cameron in 1999. (Pilot).
- Someone, presumingly John Connor himself send back a terminator (known as Cameron Phillips) to protect Sarah and himself in year 1999.
- An unknown, and mortally wounded, Resistance fighter (later identified as Wells) was sent back to warn the Connors about Greenway and the Seranno Point nuclear power plant. Sometime before he burst into the new safehouse on a surprised Sarah, he also entered the basement leaving a bloody trail to a wall where a large number of names, locations, and dates were scrawled in his own blood, giving the Connor cell a roster of targets requiring protection or elimination. ('"Automatic for the People")
- Jesse, a Resistance fighter and romantic acquaintance of (the TSCC and a slightly alternate future) Derek Reese is sent back to 2007 by the same "Bubble-tech" (Cullie's brother) that sent back Derek and his cell. She claims her use of the TDE was unsanctioned and may in fact be AWOL. However she is conducting some form of covert surveillance on young John Connor and Derek. ("The Tower Is Tall But the Fall Is Short")
Comics
- Ellis Ruggles was sent back to 1955 to watch over Sarah Connor in case another Terminator arrives. He smuggled components for a limited use anti-terminator weapon known as a fazer in his own body. He spent the intervening decades between his arrival and the events of The Terminator as a soldier and a cop, giving his life to save "The other Sarah Connor" in San Francisco.
- Corporal Graves was sent to 1965 as backup for Ellis Ruggles, however he arrived from the future on a freeway in Los Angeles and was hit and killed five seconds later.
- Colonel Mary Randall and her team assaulted a TDE facility to return to 1984. She and the surviving 4 members of her team sought to eliminate Skynet by killing key individuals in the Cyberdyne Systems hierarchy and provide additional protection for Sarah Connor.
- Captain Emmer and his overwatch squad followed Colonel Randall into the TDE facility when they were unable to observe the destruction of the site. Assuming her mission was compromised, he assumed her mission and was successful in ensuring the TDE was destroyed as they departed. Upon arrival in 1984, they also targeted key individuals in the Cyberdyne Systems hierarchy for elimination in a bid to prevent the creation of Skynet.
Novels
- Connor himself sent Kyle Reese to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor, immediately followed by a reprogrammed T-800 back in time to protect a younger version of himself. (T2: The Future War)
Quotes
- John: Do you know who that is in there? Who's dying on that table?
- Cameron: Yes. That man is First Lieutenant Derek Thomas Reese, with the 132nd SFC. Operation specialty: TechCom.
- Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, "Dungeons & Dragons"
- Sarah: What's it like when you go through time?
- Kyle: White light, a lot of pain. Like being born maybe.
- The Terminator
Tech-Com
The term Resistance is used an overwhelming majority of the time in the TV show and movies, when referring to the human resistance against the Machines. The name Tech-Com is used only once in the The Terminator film series (though it is also used to refer to John Connor's unit in Terminator Salvation). When Kyle Reese first met Sarah Connor, he identified himself as "Sergeant Tech-Com DN38416".
The term was not used in James Cameron's original script treatment [citation needed]. However, in the Terminator ancillary material, such as video games, novels, and comic books, Tech-Com has come to be used as the name for the human resistance against Skynet and the machines.
The name Tech-Com was also used by Cameron Phillips to describe Derek Reese's operation specialty.
In the Terminator Salvation novel as well as the film, John Connor's team is referred to as a "tech comm unit" which appears to be tasked with intercepting and interpreting Skynet's signals to the Hunter-Killers and Terminators in hopes of finding weaknesses, and finding back doors into restricted files, as well as fighting the machines directly. This unit intercepted plans and diagrams depicting the new model Terminator, the T-800, following a (mostly) successful strike on an underground Skynet bunker in 2018. It's possible that this unit may be what Kyle Reese is claiming to be a member of in The Terminator, as he officially joins the Resistance (and presumably Connor's unit) at the end of Terminator Salvation.
